El Paso Locomotive FC’s U-20 USL Academy team defeated rivals New Mexico United 2-1 in the final of the 44th Annual SC Del Sol President’s Day Tournament (PDT) in Phoenix this past weekend.

"Winning championships and tournaments is something to always be proud of and our boys showed great quality, proving once again that they are a group of players full of potential and promise.” Locomotive Academy Director Ivan Militar said.

One of the top youth tournaments in the country, PDT has a long history of showcasing and connecting outstanding players with college scouts across the country. With more than 100 colleges in attendance, Locomotive’s U-20 team led by College Recruitment Coordinator Alex Pozo would put on a show and go undefeated at the tournament, winning all three group games to finish top of the table before going on to win the championship game in their division against New Mexico United.

In addition to being Pozo’s first trophy with the club, the dominant displays showcased by the U-20 team caught the interest of several colleges that connected Pozo with several scouts looking for players to bolster their squads during the intercollegiate offseason.

“Our goal with the U-20 USL Academy Team is to provide young and talented players for our professional First Team, but also to provide opportunities for our student-athletes to continue their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level,” Pozo said. “Events like the PDT will definitely help us achieve these goals."
